“You hold a thing behind your back,” says Lovely She to He.
“I do, indeed, and that’s a fact,” says Handsome He to She.
“Then please, my love, you’ll kindly close those tender, lovely eyes,
and then I’ll take you by the hand and show you my surprise.”

“What is it, then? Do show me, quick!
“I love a treat or boon or trick.”
Says He, “You know what day’s today?”
Says She, “I do. It’s Sweethearts’ Day.”

“Spot on! It’s true. We’re both agreed.
“So, there’s a clue, if such you need.”
She grinned a grin and then her eyes
obeyed, to wait for her surprise.

But then her smile flipped upside down.
“My darling, pray — why now the frown?”
He wondered what could be amiss?
“What hesitation reigns? What’s this?”

Says She “I know that many folks observe this date with zeal.
“Swains ply their Flames with gifts galore, with chocolate, cards and meals.
“But don’t you think it’s overdone and, shall I say, old hat?
“My hope is that you’ve raised the bar, to silks and spice and that.”

“My love, you need not fear you’ll see a gift that irritates.
“My hand — it holds a thing that sparkles and that scintillates.”
He opes his hand and then the box that holds the sacred ice,
A ring with diamond stone so dear, you could not guess the price.

Her eyes now wide, her mouth tongue-tied, she flutters in her heart.
But still she manages, “I do!” to squeal — her passion to impart.
She loves the ring, that shiny thing, and beams her love at He.
He wells with tears and soars with joy, his gratitude complete.

But sure as night doth follow day, she frowns anew, dismayed.
He spies once more with growing horror the look her face has made.
Says He to She, “What now my love, what’s changed so soon your mien?
“What ails you now, I fear to ask, what can your visage mean?”

“Not much,” the Lovely She replies, “your gift was really dandy.
“But on the whole, I’d truly hoped — no, lusted — for the candy.”
